This article will explain what a Medicus dual hinged 460 driver is and discuss the golf driver club technology evolution that drove this product.

What is the 460 All About in The Medicus Dual Hinged 460 Driver?

460 refers to the size of the head of the Medicus dual hinged driver or any other driver of the same size for that matter, that is, 460 cubic centimeters (cc).  This is now the maximum allowable head size for a legal golf driver.  Over the past decade or so, driver club heads kept getting bigger and bigger using titanium.

Titanium is very light in weight, so the size of clubs could be expanded while still keeping the proper weight.  Why make the club heads larger?  There are several reasons for this.  First of all the MOI of the club head can be increased (Moment of Inertia).  This is a fancy way of saying that the weight of the club head can be redistributed such that it is farther away from the center of gravity of the club head.  The result is that the club can be more forgiving on off-center hits.  In other words if you don’t hit the ball exactly on the sweet spot of the club face, the resulting shot can still be pretty good.  With old persimmon wooden clubs of 20-30 years ago, for example, an off-center hit would result in a shot that was much worse.  So the larger clubs provide more margin of error for golfers.

Trampoline Effect

On top of that, a titanium club face creates a trampoline effect that resulted in the ball moving off the club face with more speed, and thus the golfer could hit longer drives.  This spring effect is something like what happens when a person jumps on a trampoline.  The spring provided by the tension in the trampoline propels the athlete way up into the air.  So the titanium club face actually flexes and indents upon ball impact and creates a spring effect just like a trampoline does.  With that in mind it is easy to see how the ball will take off from the face of the driver with more speed.

Finally a Limit on Driver Club Head Size

At some point the powers that be in the rules-making golfing world decided that enough is enough, the limit for club head sizes would be set at 460cc.  I think they were correct to do this.  460cc is already about the size of a grapefruit, and if a limit had not been set, the marketing departments of club manufacturers would continue to come out with larger and larger club heads each year, touting the increased distance they would provide.  Golf courses are already having problems around the world with golfers hitting prodigious drives.  It is not that unusual to tune in to a PGA Tour event on the weekend and hear talk about huge drives.  320 or 330 yard drives by these pros are not unusual at all.  Some golf courses have the land to lengthen holes, but some simply do not and are becoming obsolete.

And Then Comes the Medicus Dual Hinged 460 Driver

At any rate, since most of the top lines of drivers are promoting 460cc head sizes, Medicus decided to come out with a dual hinged 460 trainer as well.  By the way, these 460cc drivers really are great and easy to hit, in the opinion of this author… especially after warming up with a Medicus.  If you haven’t tried a Medicus Dual Hinge Driver, you really should.  It is a great way to warm up before each round and it will almost certainly get you more distance and accuracy.  In fact you will receive a free Medicus Putter Trainer as well if you purchase a Medicus Dual Hinged 460 Driver.  Longer, straighter drives and fewer putts… you will never bump into a better opportunity to improve your golf scores.
