Why Do The Pros Use Those Weird Looking Putters? One way to cut a few strokes off your game is to use a good putter. Surely every golfer has watched the PGA and LPGA Tours on TV and has seen the almost endless line-ups of weird looking putters the pros use today. Why do you think the best players in the world use those funny looking putters? Here’s a hint- they work! By work I mean that they help the golfer to hit more solid putts. And as Dave Pelz, the famous short game guru and teacher of many PGA Tour pros, including great short game players like Phil Michelson, has proved, the ability to hit solid putts is the most important factor in good putting. We’ll talk more about Pelz and his ideas in the next article of this series. Many modern putters today have strange looking shapes because the putter designers were trying to achieve a high MOI, or moment of inertia, for their putter head. A high MOI essentially means that a golfer can still hit solid putts even if he does not strike the ball exactly on the “sweet spot” of the putter. All you have to do is pick up a demo putter at a large golf store like Golfsmith and hit a few putts with some of the putters they have there. Use something like an Odyssey two ball, for example. In addition to really prominent alignment aids, these putters have a very high MOI. You can tell how solid the putts feel with your very first stroke. If you are still using that trusty old putter you’ve had for years, you would do well to exchange it for one of the newer ones unless you are a really good putter. And if you are shooting around 100 each round, that won’t be you. You can find some high MOI putters for good prices too, you don’t have to drop 200 bucks or more. There are a few PGA Tour pros who still use old model putters. Corey Pavin comes to mind right away. He normally still uses an old Bulls-Eye putter from probably the early 1960’s. But Pavin is a really good putter, and he knows how to hit solid putts even with that old thing. Once again, if your normal game is around 100 strokes, that is not you. In the next article in this series we’ll begin to talk about a putting practice game you can play with yourself or with friends on a practice green. The goal is to develop touch so that you eliminate 3 putts. You will train yourself to improve your distance control and hit putts the proper distance- 17 inches beyond the hole.
